Twenty-One Campfires and Confessions

Nothing filled me with more dread than the idea of a ladies’ night. Frankly, I’d rather Siobhan drag me through the jungle and feed me to whatever lions and bears and snakes waited in the underbrush.

My aversion lived in two chambers of my heart: one owned by the awkward, clumsy little girl who never learned to properly brush her hair and preferred cards with her sailor uncles over gossiping with her cousins, the other owned by the woman who would give anything for one more night with Finna and Saeth. The woman who didn’t know if she could bear a night of stories and secrets without them.

The thought tangled in my stomach, swishing around with the fresh fish I’d eaten for lunch.

“Come on, it’s not so bad,” Vian soothed as we walked through the complex after finally scrubbing away our grime in a warm bath. His freshly-cleaned hair was tied back in a black ribbon—presumably from his afternoon with Gennevieve—that only accented his bright smile. “You look like you’re going to hurl.”

I rolled my eyes at the wind sprite of a boy. If only I could breeze through problems with the same charming ease as he did, perhaps I wouldn’t feel the need to empty my guts onto the Hiraethean soil. Perhaps I wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place.

I halted, guilt rooting my feet like the ground was made of quicksand. “I just...it feels wrong? To bond with them and spend time with them and maybe laugh and have fun when...when Ronan…” The rest of the sentence got stuck in my throat with all the other goodbyes I’d left unsaid.

Vian turned, tar-black eyes sparkling with fondness. “You’re allowed to have a night for yourself.” He inhaled slowly, a steadying breath deep enough to fill my lungs, too. “Breathe, Ariannad. You deserve that much.”

In his voice, the name was a prayer that filled me with ease. True to his name, the Soul Wind blew through me, clearing out the dust and doubt as he bounced toward the clearing, a skip in his step. The warmth that bubbled up from my pit chased away the lingering, smoky guilt that still clouded my heart. The tether that tied us together tugged at my gut again, coaxing me to follow.

Perhaps he was right. If I could make space for the dark fairy in my life, I could clear some room for a few new female friends, too. Even if it meant enduring my hair brushed and braided.

My own steps felt lighter as I followed the little windsinger, his black ponytail bouncing behind him. By the time I caught up with him—my sides burning from the run and the laughter that stole the breath from my chest—he’d already made it to the clearing.

If I hadn’t already been panting, the scene in front of me might have knocked the wind out of me.

It was straight from one of Ronan’s fairytales. The women were already there, lounging on grass-woven beds and pillows made of some of the finest silk I’d ever seen.
